{home-made} laundry supplies

At the first of 2012 I decided I was going to try to make as many things home-made as possible not only to cut back on costs, but also to cut back on the amount of added ingredients/preservatives.  Not very many things stuck, but a few of the things that I have kept up making myself are laundry detergent and softener.
My girls both have had eczema since they were newborns and I always used Dreft detergent when washing their clothes.  Even Dreft didn’t help take it away.  Since using this home-made detergent and softener, their skin condition has gotten 99% better!  I love using these!  Every time I had  to go to the grocery store for laundry detergent I cringed because it’s so expensive.  This is a very cheap alternative!
LAUNDRY DETERGENT RECIPE:
This smells yummy!  It works great too, especially on whites.  This is a lot cheaper than using store bought detergent.  Here’s what you need:

1 C. Washing Soda
1 C. Borax
2 C. grated Fels-Naptha (1 bar)
Grate an entire bar of Fels-Naptha with a cheese grater.  Mix the Washing Soda and Borax in with it and then place in your blender.  Blend together until the mixture becomes a powder.  Add 2T for a large load and about 1T for small loads!  Keep in air-tight container.
ENjoy the SmEll!!
(sometimes I leave my container open to make my laundry room smell yummy!
FABRIC SOFTENER RECIPE:
6 C. HOT Water
3 C. White Vinegar
2 C. Conditioner (I used Suave Refreshing Waterfall)
Mix the conditioner in with hot water and stir with whisk until the conditioner is completely dissolved.  Add the vinegar and mix well.  Store in empty softener container or milk jug, etc.  Use 2T per load.  Makes enough for about 110 loads!

This has been on my to do list forever. I’m always afraid it won’t clean as well, but I just need to dive in and try it. I hate buying detergent too cause it’s so $$$!ReplyCancel

does the conditioner leave residue on your clothes though? I am hesitant using conditioner on my hair unless it is the salon stuff because of the residue it leaves behind. Have you noticed any film?
Do you just pour the 2 tbsp in the wash or do you use the downey ball or what?

I’d like to try this. I’m currently using this method: http://smallfineprint.com/how-to-save-on-fabric-softner/ReplyCancel

Hey, I'm Kami!

Welcome to the blog

Wife to my Jr. High sweetheart, mother to three daughters. I have always loved being social and staying connected with other people who have similar interests to me. I started a blog back in 2010 and have been in the social networking scene since then. I love meeting new people and helping them feel confident, and see their own beauty.
